All The King's Men is a male-voice liturgical choir, associated with the College Chapel of St. John the Evangelist at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. Much of their music draws from a rich tradition of Latin and English choral music for men's voices within the context of the Anglican services of Evensong and Compline. Much of the repertoire is early period. All the Kings Men sings evensong on the first Sunday of the month, for more information about the repertoire for a particular service, please check their web page at: All the King's Men and click on next service.
The concert also features a major new work by Andrew for Camerata Nova, Inuit singer, viola and percussion. Called Medieval Inuit, this drama of sounds and rhythm is based on the theme of early encounters between Inuit and Europeans, incorporating experiments in combining throat singing with rhythmic medieval chant. The soaring spirals of Église Précieux-Sang in St. Boniface will provide a perfect setting for this performance.
Individual Ticket Prices: Adults $22, Seniors $20, Students $10*
During the Renaissance era, composers often formed new works from existing compositions, whether their own or those of other musicians. Some of the re-designed works sounded like arrangements, others as new compositions. Regardless of which, the practice of re-composition was not masked. Rather, most audience members recognised the earlier works, and enjoyed the play of memory and creation in the blend of old and new.
Claudio Monteverdi often followed this practice, whether in works for small chamber ensemble or for choir. Through these works the later-named "Seconda Prattica" style of composition emerged, ushering in the baroque era. Renaissance Resoundings features some of Monteverdi's re-composed works, including two pieces from the Selva Morale e Spirituale - Laudate Dominum and Beatus Vir. In addition, re-fashioned music by contemporaries of Monteverdi will be heard, including Sweelink's rendition of Dowland's Lacrimae Pavana, and Philips take on Caccini's Amarilli for harpsichord. The program rounds out with a number of works based on songs that are well known and loved by audiences of early music. These include Emanuel Adriaensen's arrangements of Gastoldi's Se ben vedi, o vita mia and a Neapolitan song entitled Amanti miei for two or three voices.
We look forward to sharing these musical treasures together with you.
